A very kind friend who lives in Suisun Valley offered me a place to grow one of my carosello cucumber varieties in 2023. I had not had space to grow a variety that a friend told me was very good, but I did have seed from the previous year of the variety, named the Scopattizo di San Donato, which I was able to plant out.
Suisun Valley is known for being very a very fertile agricultural area. There is a diversity of plants that can be grown in the area, but – as with much of the more fertile areas of California – much of it has been turned into vineyards.
As with many other plantings that I set out in Early May, the unseasonably cold weather required for me to replant some of the transplants. In order to ensure that the plants did well, I also added plenty of compost provided free by the city of Fairfield. It looked so good that I dubiously assumed that must produce good results.
